The Museum and Gardens will be closed to the public until Saturday 17th January, we look forward to welcoming you back then. Happy New Year!

Update from the Gardens – June 2024

Someone has turned on the sun! At last we are moving away from grey and rainy days. This means a switch in activity in the gardens. We have entered the season of watering.

The volunteers have been working hard in the garden over the last month keeping on top of the main summer jobs: Watering, weeding and dead heading.

With the end to the constant rain we have been able to really get on top of the mowing and the grass is now looking tidy and even (in length if not in colour!).

The 17th Century Garden and the Rose garden are looking at their best now.  The lavender and box hedging give the 17th Century Garden its identity.  The intense purple of the lavender flowers are currently at their peak and looking vibrant.  The box hedging in this garden doesn’t do as well as in the Rose or Cottage gardens due to the location.  The intense sun at this time of year and the position close to gravel and flag paths means the box is under more stress so needs some TLC.  We will be watering and feeding the hedges now they have been clipped to give them a boost.

The mixed border is also looking good, the Aruncus dioicus (Goat’s beard), Sisyrinchium striatum and Martagon Lily are flowering profusely.

The Rose Garden has been magnificent this year, flowers, colour and scent by the bucket load.  My ‘Best in Show’ in this area definitely goes to Rosa Lovestruck, followed in a close second by our Peace roses.  Come in and smell the roses while they are in their prime.
